The D. K. and its environment

The Drienčany karst with an area of 16 km2 plays an important role in reproduction and migration of numerous plant and animal species between the Slovak karst and the Muránska plain. There were discovered 850 species and subspecies of more complex plants one tenth of which are recorded as endangered or rare. The rarest animals are aquatic, thermophilic and cave species. The peculiarity of this territory is a marginal karst formed at the dividing line between karst and non-karst rocks. There are recorded 190 dolines, numerous karren, dry and blind karst valleys, 58 springs and 38 explored caves in this territory, the Podbanište cave with its total length of 1,570 m is the longest among them. The educational path starts from the village Teplý Vrch and its total length is 7,540 m, if the tour ends at Drienčany, its length is 5,210 m. The total superelevation is 55 m.
