The Hickory forest

It is locatedin the territory of the so-called Malá obora which was formed artificially for the hunting purposes of the Coburgs` manor. At the end of the 19th cemtury there were planted about 50 trees of 5 hickory species. The trees come from North America and here they were monitored for their ability to acclimatize. At present the forest vegetation of Malá Obora is formed by two stages in which hornbeam, English oak and Turkey oak are dominant. Ash, hickory, linden, horse chestnut, maple and other species occur in lesser amounts. The biggest oak trees are about 200 years old. Their hollows provide a biotope for numerous species of invertebrates and arboreal birds. The territory was declared a protected area in 1965 and today it stretches on an area of 48.62 ha.
